It is a common opinion amongst medical professionals that having family members close by during treatments can help patients heal faster. However, for military personal in particular, it’s not always financially feasible to have family members stay close by. That’s where the idea for The Fisher House Foundation was born. The organization provides free homes, built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers, that allow family members to be close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
Since its inception in 1990, The Fisher House program has served over 368,000 families, saving them over $451 million that would have otherwise been spent on lodging and transportation to keep their families together during a medical emergency. Each Fisher House has up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room.
Over the years, Fisher House has continued to expand the ways it could help military families. For example, The Hero Miles Program uses donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members. The Foundation also created scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans, which has awarded over $24 million to date!
Military families stand by the side of their service members throughout their careers, through deployments and overseas stations. They command the homefront while their loved ones serve around the world. Fisher Houses allow the families to remain by the side of their loved ones during the toughest of battles — the battle for continued health after service.
